Shanna Shryne Design Does Pasadena: A Visit to the Showcase House of Design

After attending the event last year, we at Shanna Shryne Design were looking forward to the announcement of this year’s Showcase House of Design. Yes, it would again require a field trip from the South Bay to the Pasadena area, but based on the insanely creative scene of last year, we couldn’t refuse.

Nestled in the heart of San Marino, the Bauer Estate & Gardens opened its doors to the public from April 20 to May 18, 2025, marking the 60th anniversary of the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This year's showcase was deeply influenced by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, which affected several participating designers. Despite these challenges, the design community came together to create spaces that celebrated resilience and artistic expression. Let us walk you through a brief history of this storied estate and a few of our favorite designed rooms!

The Bauer Estate, a 1928 Monterey Colonial Revival-style home, was designed by renowned architect Reginald D. Johnson and built by Peter Hall, famed for his work on the Gamble House. Owned by just two families in its rich 96 year old existence, the estate spans over 15,000 square feet and is set on five acres of meticulously landscaped grounds. The property features 18 major rooms, each transformed by over 30 interior and landscape designers. The design team embraced a blend of vintage charm and modern sensibilities, incorporating elements like wallpapered ceilings, custom millwork, and locally sourced art.

The Gentleman’s Study

The second owner of the home was Stephen J. Cannell, an acclaimed television writer and producer known for creating decades of hits on the silver screen. The inspiration behind this design comes straight from the Cannell’s life’s work and the legacy he’s created in this very room. You feel his story the moment you walk in. The space is filled with moody lighting, rich textures, deep tones, and a bold, layered style that leans into maximalism. Think of it like Harry Potter all grown up, with his own cozy study—now a member of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Every piece has been carefully chosen, and the original writer’s desk has been lovingly restored to bring a sense of comfort and curiosity. The whole transformation is designed to feel like a warm hug, adding tons of personality and charm to what is truly a one-of-a-kind Gentleman’s Study.

The Library

The Library draws its inspiration from the traditional British "Snug"—a cozy, intimate space designed for relaxed gatherings with family and friends. It’s a place for quiet reading, thoughtful conversation, and unwinding, surrounded by art, books, and cherished travel mementos. Key elements include ambient lighting, inviting seating, and practical touches like side tables for drinks and stacks of books. A bar cart holds cocktail essentials, while footstools are positioned near the fireplace for added comfort. The art selection features maps, travel souvenirs, and works from both contemporary and vintage artists. Layered rugs and a grasscloth ceiling contribute to the curated, collected feel. Beautiful books and art objects are thoughtfully displayed against patterned wallpaper, with a custom fireplace surround adorned in handmade Delft tiles, each with original imagery, serving as a striking focal point.

Primary Suite

The designer’s objective for the Primary Suite was to thoughtfully revitalize the space in a manner that honored the home's original character and period, while incorporating modern sensibilities and a timeless design aesthetic. Undertaken by an interior design firm known for seamlessly blending old and new elements, the project was a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the restoration of this historic Pasadena residence. A custom architrave detail was introduced and carried throughout the new woodwork, establishing continuity within the refreshed spaces. New pass-through bookcases were added, the fireplace was reimagined, and the bathroom and closet areas—originally divided into two separate bathrooms and closets—were completely reconfigured into a more functional and cohesive layout. Additionally, the team hand-drew and custom-designed both the floor tile and wallpaper for the sunroom, infusing the suite with a personal and creative touch.

Garden Studio and Washroom

The garden studio and washroom serve as a sanctuary for creativity in everyday life. Drawing inspiration from Beatrix Potter’s illustrations, where gardens and creative spaces seamlessly blend, this area encourages a slower pace and a deeper connection with nature. An antique drafting desk positioned by the window offers a serene spot for watercolor painting, while a potting table with a copper sink stands ready for gardening or shaping clay. The interior architectural details align with the home’s 1920s design, while handmade furniture and fixtures highlight exceptional craftsmanship. The space is both functional and inviting, with layers of character and a touch of whimsy. Restored cabinetry showcases a collection of local art and ceramics, celebrating the creativity of the surrounding community.

Each room, from the Gentleman’s Study to the Garden Studio, tells a unique story, blending the charm of vintage design with modern sensibilities.
