Bringing Classic Blue Into Your Home

Pantone named Classic Blue its Color of the Year for 2020, calling the shade “timeless and enduring.”  Since this color pairs well with neutrals such whites, grays, browns and golds, swapping in some Classic Blue is an easy way to give your spaces new life. It’s a traditional, primary color, so don’t worry about this blue going out of style anytime soon. Overall, Classic Blue is a great color for design!

Here are six ways to bring this color into your home:

ACCENT PILLOWS

Matching a rich color with a soft texture is the combo for a perfect pillow. If you want your sofa and bed to be the most relaxing spots in the home, then styling with soft Classic Blue accent pillows is just the trick. This color creates a calm, comfortable look and feel. Classic Blue stands out, against a neutral sofa, like in this Hermosa Beach home we loved designing.

AREA RUG

Anchor a room in dependable Classic Blue by incorporating a soft area rug.  The Misty rug designed by David Rockwell for the Rug Company is a great choice.  It’s made of bamboo silk and has a deep indigo blue ombré motif inspired by a watercolor brush stroke.

CABINETS

A fresh coat of Classic Blue paint can do wonders for cabinets.  The kitchen pictured below uses Sherwin Williams’ 6244 Naval. Similar colors include Valspar’s Classic Royal Blue, Benjamin Moore’s Patriot Blue, Dunn Edwards’ Deep Sapphire, and Farrow & Ball’s Drawing Room Blue. These blues pair well with white walls and gold fixtures, which can give a room a luxe look.

WALLPAPER

Dark wallpaper gives a room depth and sophistication.   The powder room below, designed by Elizabeth Bolognino, uses Phillip Jeffries Manila hemp wallpaper in navy.  Strong geometric lines elicit bright and impactful feelings enhanced by Classic Blue.

WALL ART

Make no mistake, Classic Blue wall art makes a statement. Even a small framed piece pops, but there’s a real wow factor when you scale up to a large work of art.  The painting by artist Celine Ziang showcases Classic Blue, or you could opt for something more calm and cool.

SOFA

If you’re really feeling Classic Blue, go big or go home with a bold statement piece such as the Ondea modular sofa from Roche Bobois, designed by Sacha Lakic. Classic Blue is foolproof…so be playful and have fun!
