Behind the Scenes: Coastal Chic

A young professional living in Hermosa Beach, CA was looking to give her home a complete overhaul to meet her modern & discerning design tastes. We gladly took on this challenge and completely transformed this home into a bright and open space inspired by the client’s love of bold colors and unique design elements including European cabinets, custom furnishings and organic materials.

The kitchen is arguably one of the most important parts of a home. It’s typically where people end up congregating the most, so it’s very important to transform the kitchen into a beautiful and functional masterpiece. To achieve this, we completely gutted the old kitchen so we could start with a blank canvas. We chose a light color palette to make the room feel more spacious. The champagne-colored island serves as the focal point adding warmth and dimensions to the white cabinets and walls. We also paneled the fridge to blend seamlessly with the rest of the European cabinets. The countertops were the first design element we had fun choosing. The organic grey veins and specks of gold pull together the backsplash tile with the bits of metallic specifically scattered throughout.

The dining room is so light and airy just like the panoramic ocean view that can be seen on this main living space. The chairs are made with a neoprene fabric which is the same material wetsuits are made out from; fitting for a coastal dwelling. This home has a fresh, California feel, but it isn’t in-your-face beachy. The space offers subtle but luxurious accessories like the one-of-a-kind carved marble lamps, convex mirror from Arteriros, and the hand blown glass vase from Palecek, which is reminiscent of beach glass.  Accessories are small finishing touches which elevate rooms and provide an elegant ambiance.

The client’s unique art collection became the inspiration for the living room. The deep ocean colored velvet chairs from Jonathan Adler make the space look sharp in a relaxed way.  The custom designed ottoman upholstered in brightly striped fabric from Knoll offers storage and pulls in the colors of the curated art collection. Plants bring in an organic element while adding depth and height to the room...they’re like living sculptures. All of these design elements mixed together, result in an eye catching medley of colors and textures. This type of design provides a comfortable and livable space.

At first glance, this bathroom appears to be a mellow mix of grey and subtle patterns, but there are some hidden details to make it even more intriguing. If you look closely, the stripes of the wallcovering are actually the Beverly Hills city skyline from Una Malan. As your eye travels upward you’ll see the statement light fixture from Arteriors. The light is contemporary, unique and overscaled which is perfect for a powder bathroom. I love designing powder bathrooms because I can really pull out the stops and make rooms like this a topic of conversation through the creative design elements shown here.

Wallcoverings are always a great start when you’re looking to completely transform a room. The bold watercolor wallcovering from Black Crow Studios as the focal point of the room. We softened the bold colors in the wallcovering with a chandelier from Anthropolgie, creating a subtle coastal vibe. The bed was custom designed with a folded leather and lucite legs, the perfect piece the room needed. As with the rest of the house, this room is fitted with automated window covering to make the home high-tech, innovative and comfortable.

Last but certainly not least, is the trendy and modern master bathroom. This room has so many unique and thoughtful elements enabling the client to feel at home. The ocean colored cabinets add character and depth to the room. While the gold drawer pulls, by Sarah Silverman add a touch of glamour.  Mixing metals is a trend I highly encourage. This offers flexibility and complete customization while designing. While the plumbing fixtures are polished chrome, the cabinet hardware, mirror and sconces, from Kelly Wearstler, are in a gold...perfect mix of warm and cool tones. The hexagon wall tiles were arranged by hand in an ombre pattern, giving a most unique and eye-catching design. Additionally, the floor tiles are actually two different colors adding another level of detail and distinction.

This bathroom has all sorts of hidden gems. One being a custom designed jewelry organizer which is concealed behind doors and inside one of the cabinets. The specially made drawers fit a variety of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and everything else you desire to store with utmost organization.

This home is filled with detail and packed with design, truly creating custom luxury for this young and hip homeowner.  Whether your tastes are subtle or bold, always choose items and finishes that speak to your personal style. Have fun and enjoy the process!
